Make your own Tracks

In NJ, we only have one "official" cross country ski center. And it's in a state park that officially closes at 4:30. No night skiing during the week; boo hoo. Even if they were able to offer night skiing, Sussex County is a bit of a drive for most people after a hard day at the office. But there's no need to wait for the weekend if you'd rather ski. If there's snow on the ground where you live, find an open space and make your own loop.

Last winter and again this winter, I'm using a field in a park to do some classic skiing on a 400-meter (approx) loop that I made myself. The first couple of times around, I double-poled and strode a bit. If there's lots of snow on the ground, your track may need 5 or 6 laps before it becomes decently compacted. Where I needed to make a 90-degree turn, I stomped out a somewhat wider area so I could step around the corner.

Setting up a skate track takes a little more work. Flatland Posse members Dave Baker and Lars Jacobsen spent an evening packing down a hill for skating by sidestepping up it repeatedly.

Talk about flatland: In south Jersey, where John Hart lives, there's more vertical gain on your stack o' pancakes at the diner than there is on the terrain. That didn't stop him from setting up approximately 2 km of skate track at the municipal soccer field complex. He started by skating around it 6 times. Then he sidestepped around it at 8-inch intervals, and finished by double poling around the outside. When he was through, he had a 10-foot-wide track which he likened to a solid machine groomed track at Prospect Mt or Salmon Hills.

Be opportunistic about where you go. I've skiied on high school playing fields, by the train station in Chatham Boro (when I lived there) and right up the street in a raging blizzard or 2. Look for a place you can walk to from your home. You may be surpised at what you find.

If you have a larger piece of property, a snowmobile, and a desire to put up a more ambitious trail, check out this article on setting up a trail system.
